“The audience represents a major component in the art of live
theatre. We have, therefore, deliberately made it fun and exciting
for the general public to become an integral part of the play
development process. Their participation, feedback and patronage
will contribute significantly to the creation of Singapore
originals.”
- Ekachai
Uekrongtham,
ACTION Theatre's Artistic Director |
The Stage Sanctuary, a creative refuge
for the public and the playwrights offers two audience-participation
programmes, both of which are open free of charge to the public, on a
first come, first served basis.
“The play creation process does not have to be an isolated,
stressed-out experience for the playwrights. Active audience
participation will not only enliven it but also contribute to the
shaping of plays that will eventually have to be staged in front of a
live audience.”
- Desmond Sim, Oasis Director &
ACTION Theatre's Associate Artistic
Director
POTLUCK THEATRE
At a Potluck Theatre session, playwrights from The Playwriting Spa
meet the public, share their works-in-progress with them in an
informal manner. This open-air event is held in the garden courtyard
at 42 Waterloo Street.

|
Culinary delights at
Potluck Theatre come in the form of food dishes brought in by the
playwrights, the audience as well as celebrity chefs such as Life!
food columnist Sylvia Tan, Life! food critic Wong Ah Yoke and
Singapore's top comedian/actor Hossan Leong.
Bite into selected scenes from the playwrights' upcoming plays while
feasting on special gourmet creations including Sylvia Tan's Babi Asam
Garam (Perenakan delicacy featuring grilled tender meat marinated in
delicate Tamarind and aromatic spices), Wong Ah Yoke's Krathong Thong
(Savoury light-as-air pastry shells stuffed with fragrant and juicy
minced meat) and Hossan Leong's Gorgeous Green Curry (concocted from a
secret recipe passed on to him by a Thai native).

THEATRE IDOLS
Another programme within The Sanctuary is a series of interactive
audience participation shows called Theatre Idols. Complete plays from
the Playwriting Spa are given staged readings directed by 2-time Life!
Theatre Award nominee Samantha Scott-Blackhall in front of live
audiences, after which Guest Commentators will give on-the-spot,
no-holds-barred but constructive critique on the new works.
The audience are also able to add their two cents' worth LIVE before
voting for their favourite plays and their favourite actors in Theatre
Idols.
Guest Commentators for the 2004/2005 Theatre Idols are theatre
academic Dr K K Seet, known for his acerbic but often dead-on accurate
commentary; the fearlessly opinionated arts journalist Ong Sor Fern,
and the sharp, witty former Deputy Public Prosecutor and celebrated
playwright Eleanor Wong.
