ABOUT THEATRE IDOLS
Singapore public now has a say on the future of local theatre. They
decide which plays get staged and which don’t.
ACTION Theatre proudly presents Theatre Idols, a new live show where
members of the public will be able to preview staged readings of
original new plays in full for free before casting their votes on
the ones they feel deserve full stagings.
The plays are culled from the works of 38 local playwrights who are
members of ACTION Theatre’s Playwriting Spa
Theatre Idols is our way of making it fun for the public to be part
of the creation and shaping of new Singapore plays. For playwrights,
it’s a fresh, interactive platform for sharing their works with live
audiences and obtaining direct feedback on how to improve them.
And at the first and second installment of Theatre Idols, the
highly participative audience sent David Fuhrmann-Lim’s Smitten and
Verena Tay’s The Car to the Finals. The freshly penned plays were
given a dramatic reading on stage, and the show format ensured that
everyone got into the action of voting for the future of local
theatre.
SHOW FORMAT
At each installment of Theatre Idols, staged readings of two
complete plays are presented.
Before the staged readings commence, judges begin by ‘judging the
plays by their synopses” and give their initial reactions. Their
comments are then compared to the web poll results.
Ten minutes into each play, the staged reading is frozen. Judges can
decide to freeze the play or let it continue till the end. Audiences
can vote against judge’s decisions.
When plays end, judges give their critique with playwrights on hand
to listen. Playwrights have the right to retort, rebut or rebuke.
After which, audiences have their say before casting their votes.
The play with higher number of votes goes into the Finals.
The winning play at the Finals receives full staging by ACTION
Theatre during the 2005/2006 season. Voters and playwrights stand to
win grand and monthly prizes including a free trip to Bangkok
complete with hotel accommodation, meals at top restaurants and
luxurious spa experiences at The Aspara.
Audiences can cast their votes via SMS on the spot during the live
show, results of the voting will be known and announced during the
show.
Theatre Idols is part of Singapore Theatre Oasis, ACTION
Theatre’s series of educational programmes and interactive
activities designed to nurture a wellspring of new Singapore plays.
The Playwriting Spa, also part of Singapore Theatre Oasis, was
launched in September 2004. It attracted nearly 100 applicants, out
of which 40 aspiring and experienced playwrights were admitted and
put through a series of playwriting and creative rejuvenation
